US job growth is under the microscope again, with investors looking for signs of a deterioration.
The latest economist consensus estimate is for an addition of 65,000 payrolled workers in April, down from last month’s surprisingly strong 178,000. The unemployment rate is forecast to remain at 4.3%. On wages, analysts project 0.3% m/m and 3.8% y/y growth in average hourly earnings.
Referencing last month’s broad-based gains across industries, Deutsche Bank’s Brett Rayner noted that some of that strength was a function of a strike resolution at a major healthcare company as well as a possible seasonal boost from the shifting Easter holiday. (LS – Continue Reading)
The US and Iran opened fire in the Strait of Hormuz, with each side claiming the other initiated the attack.
The renewal of hostilities further imperils the two countries’ ceasefire agreement, which had already been badly damaged by repeated accusations that its terms are being breached.
President Donald Trump, in a call with an ABC News reporter later Thursday, insisted that the ceasefire remains in effect, saying the strikes are “just a love tap.” (CNBC – Continue Reading)

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he would give the European Union until July 4 to implement trade deal commitments before he raises tariffs on EU goods including cars to "much higher levels."
Trump said in a Truth Social post that he issued the new deadline during a "great call" with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in which the two leaders also agreed that Iran could never have a nuclear weapon.
In a surprise move, Trump last Friday announced that he would raise tariffs on EU vehicles to 25% from the previously agreed 15% because the EU was not complying with the terms of a deal struck in Scotland last July. (RTRS – Continue Reading)
President Donald Trump’s 10% global tariffs were declared unlawful by a federal trade court in a fresh blow to the administration’s economic agenda, just months after the US Supreme Court vacated earlier levies he’d imposed.
A divided three-judge panel at the US Court of International Trade in Manhattan on Thursday granted a request by a group of small businesses and two dozen mostly Democrat-led states to invalidate the tariffs. Trump imposed the 10% duties in February under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which had never previously been invoked. (BBG – Continue Reading)
